Introduction

Qiao Hu is the most didactic authentic video listening resource I have found for beginners. I highly recommend it for all beginning and intermediate-level students of Mandarin. It is a sure-fire way to get your toddlers understanding the language, but is also very useful for adults in limited doses. Warning: some of the baby songs are actually catchy!

At least once a month, I will write a study guide for a Qiao Hu episode. If you are new to this page and are a beginning student of Chinese who would like to use these study guides, I suggest starting from the first guide and then using them sequentially. I will write these guides for exactly my level of Chinese, which I still consider total beginner but, by the time my experiment is up, I hope will be at an intermediate level (at least low intermediate) in terms of listening comprehension. Each guide will indicate the level I was at when I wrote it by the number of hours of viewing I had done at that point in time. (It is therefore plausible that I will make two or more guides on the same episode for different levels).

I will provide the links to Word documents for all study guides at the top, and then full text versions of the study guides below, with the most recent one on top. The Word documents will generally be more useful, since the in-page text will have some loss of formatting.

In the spirit of my experiment, these guides do not actually teach any Mandarin in a traditional way. There are no translations, no grammatical explanations, and actually no Mandarin at all. Instead, they serve the following purposes:

(1) Identify excellent Qiao Hu episodes (or parts of episodes), especially in terms of a beginner wanting to pick up new vocabulary and provide a YouTube link.

(2) Identify the topics that are covered in that episode.

(3) Identify the specific vocabulary that I was able to pick up or reinforce in that episode (the terms are provided only in English, so it’s just a guide of what to look for, rather than a vocabulary list).

(4) Provide a synposis of that episode.

(5) Break down the episode by sections, explain what happens in each section and provide a vocabulary guide for that section.

SYNOPSIS

In this fantastic Qiao Hu episode, even a total beginner can learn the names of several body parts and fruit, as they are clearly pronounced and repeated many times.

After an introductory song, during which Qiao Hu and the main female and male hosts introduce themselves and the numbers 1-10 are reviewed, there are nearly 7 minutes about washing the different parts of the body.

First, real people see and dance a song about washing their body parts. After two other short skits about washing and hygiene, a cartoon Qiao Hu mother gives her son a bath, and then a real mother gives her real boy a bath, providing significant repetition and reinforcement.

The next 3 ½ minutes show a different type of slow-moving cartoon shows several kids getting their hair cut at a salon. Friendly greetings, questions and answers, thank yous, and goodbyes are exchanged.

Next, for just over 2 minutes, a song is repeated with boys and girls rapping/massaging their parents’ backs and getting positive feedback/approval for doing so

This transitions about 3 ½ minutes about clothing. Wearing long-sleeve shirts is important when it’s cold and windy! The same basic vocabulary is presented by the cartoon characters and then a real mother and daughter.

Finally, you will be treated to an entertaining 3 ½ minutes in which you can easily learn the name of 7 types of fruit, in addition to reinforcing a basic self-introduction and greeting.

The last 7:40 minutes are fine, but not great like the rest for my level, therefore they are not part of the recommended viewing.

SYNOPSIS:

The first part of this episode is about butterflies flying around, making this noun and the verb very easy to learn and remember. First, a woman and girl sing and dance with Qiao Hu; then a video of butterflies is shown with the voices of a father and his son commenting.

About seven minutes follow about using the bathroom. This is useful vocabulary that you might not easily pick up otherwise! A cartoon dog knocks on a bathroom (outhouse?) door, but the bathroom is occupied by a peeing a cat, followed by a pooping bird and elephant. Each animal is quite pleased with the relief it gets, as is the dog when he finally gets in to poop himself. The topic is reinforced by several clips of parents helping and encouraging their kids to use the bathroom.

The next two minutes have a nice and very repetitive song, but I don’t understand what they’re saying.

The final section of new content, which lasts nearly three minutes, is about seeing sheep, cows, and rabbits at a farm. First, it’s the family of Qiao Hu puppets, and then a girl with her parents. Very simple sentences along the lines of, “Look, little daughter, at the rabbits.” Or “Let’s feed the cows” are repeated.

What makes this episode particularly useful are the two sections at the end. They review almost all the vocabulary from this episode. The viewer may actually want to use this review as an introduction, starting out with this section (beginning at 20:30) before watching the entire episode. From 20:30 – 21:20, all the animals and body parts are reviewed in a very didactic manner. Then, from 21:20 – 23:35, the bathroom vocabulary is reviewed, as well as the body parts and butterflies once again.

SYNOPSIS:

 

The first couple sections of this video are about elephants.

 

However, the largest chunk of the episode is about brushing your teeth. It is very repetitive, which means it does not introduce a lot vocabulary, but it does reinforce the terms brush and teeth quite thoroughly. Additionally, some useful polite dialogue between parents and children is reinforced in these sections. The basic concept, repeated over more than 7 minutes in various settings—cartoon, puppets, and real people—is that parents help their children brush their teeth; children should say eee and aaa and then brush, brush, brush.

 

The next five minutes are introduce the foods carrots, broccoli, corn, mushrooms, and meat (or a type of meat, I’m not sure), which are chopped up and used to make soup.

 

Next, puppet and real live families visit sunflower gardens, and this term is repeated many times.

 

Finally, there is a soothing song about pedaling a bicycle, accompanied by a cartoon reminiscent of picture book illustrations.

 

As with the Qiao Hu episode studied last month, an extremely useful vocabulary review section is included at the end. The student may want to begin with this review, at minute 21:00, and afterward watch the entire video from the beginning.

SYNOPSIS:

 

The Qiao Hu life-size puppet interacts with cartoon shapes. The shapes introduce themselves, one by one. Qiao Hu then counts slowly to ten, and in the next section, tries to find the shapes, which are playing hide-and-seek in everyday objects. Next, Qiao Hu and friends sing and dance to a song about the shapes, one of which is attached to each person’s clothing. Thus, the first six minutes of this episode are a wonderful introduction to or review of shapes. They also provide a review of other vocabulary, especially the numbers 1 to 10.

 

Next, kids comment as these shapes are put together to form common objects, providing an opportunity to learn new everyday nouns. In another recommended section, an illustrated snippet shows how great it is for kids to share toys and play together. The word “train” is reinforced.

 

Minutes 9:26 through 22:26 are good, typical Qiao Hu viewing, but they are not included are recommended viewing in this guide because they do not provide nearly as rich vocabulary learning opportunities for beginners, such as myself.

 

By contrast, the last two minutes that I review of this episode are a goldmine. Any beginner not only gets an amazingly clear review of the numbers 1 to 6, but can easily learn six new vocabulary words (the objects these words describe match the shape of the numbers): pencil, duck, butterfly, sailboat, hook, and whistle. These two minutes are so clear and easy that they could easily have been made for foreign students of Mandarin!

SYNOPSIS:

 

The first section is a little story about how Qiao Hu and his bunny friend need to wash their hands before eating their snack. They arrive at home with Qiao Hu’s father, having purchased the snack, and greet their mother excitedly at the door. They sit down to eat the donut-like snack right away, but a fairy appears, introduces himself, and explains they need to wash their hands before eating. The kids are confused because they don’t see any dirt on their hands. However, the fairy uses his magic to reveal malicious germs that intend to make them sick. The kids are convinced and happily go wash their hands and their rinse the germs out of their mouths. They thank the fairy and dig into their snack.

 

The second section is a slow musical animation about a mouse watching kids successively dance, kick a soccer ball, and paint. I understood very little.

 

Next, there is a very useful and slow review of the numbers from 1-10 that is always a great way to learn the Chinese characters for these numbers (though that is not my goal at this point).

 

The fourth section is another little Qiao Hu story with a moral: at a competition, you should do your best, not worry, and cooperate; if you try to be the fastest and win at all costs, you might fall flat. Qiao Hu and Meymey are a team and competing against two other pairs of kids at a three-legged race. The parents are all happily repeating a cheer in the background (something like “Let’s go!”). However, Meymey is worried because she is not very fast. Qiao Hu recalls something his mother told him and tries to encourage Meymey, telling her not to worry. She feels better and they start racing. Another pair, however, becomes stressed because they are falling behind and feel the need to go faster. Instead, they end up tripping and falling. This time it is Meymey who makes them feel better, and in the end all the kids cross the finish line and receive their parental congratulations.

 

To conclude the first part of the episode (this Guide is on the first 16 minutes, and my next Guide will cover the remaining content), there is a simple animation used to teach opposites. A fast hare is compared to a slow turtle (no morality tale here), and wide bridge for a bus is compared to a narrow bridge for a tricycle, and a light cat is compared to a heavy bear.

SYNOPSIS:

 

In the first section of this second part of the video (starting at 16:05), viewers learn that mothers—and not children—should open the door when someone comes to visit. The Qiao Hu muppet introduces the topic. Then, two scenarios are shown. In both, someone knocks on the door while the mother is busy talking on the phone. In the first scenario, her daughter takes the initiative and opens the door. In the second, she first asks who it is, relates the information to her mother, and then they go together to open the door. The second scenario is shown to be the correct procedure.

 

In the next section, a friendly elephant is driving a vehicle from a flower shop. He meets several animals on the way who are upset, and helps them by giving them a ride. Just after dropping them all off, his vehicle gets stuck in the sand, but all his grateful friends come to help and push him out.

 

I did not understand the third section very well. A group of hunters is very happy about their prospects of catching a tiger until they see something in a cave which shocks and depresses them. As they leave, they run into to squirrels, numbered from one to ten. All I really know about this section is that it is an amazingly clear review of the numbers from one to ten.

 

Next, there is a very catchy song whose refrain might mean something like, “I like you”—but I’m really not sure.

 

There is then a strange section for teaching the opposites thick and thin, and reviewing heavy and light (I believe). A clown compares tree stumps and books and thus learns more about these opposites.

 

Finally, a kid uses Qiao Hu paraphernalia to role play doctor. He first treats a girl who see is not feeling well, apparently prescribing medicine to the grateful patient. Next, he applies a bandage to a boy who has hurt is leg.

SYNOPSIS:

 

This great Qiao Hu episode begins with a “Kung Fu Dance.” Lifesize dolls of Qiao Hu and his bunny friend, as well as a young woman, do a dance where they punch and kick, reviewing words related to directions, such as “left” and “right.”

 

Next, a Qiao Hu morality tale has the cartoon version of the tiger playing (perhaps in a mall) with his bunny and elephant friends. Their mothers go off but they all agree that the parents will soon come back and the kids will then leave the play area. When they arrive, however, the elephant boy wants to play more and disobeys. The other kids obey and go with their mothers to get balloons. When the elephant boy sees this, he runs out, but all the balloons are gone. After learning his lesson and apologizing to his mother, he gets to play with Qiao Hu’s balloon.

 

The third section is a variation of a typical Qiao Hu story. Young boy is playing and tasty food is served. He wants to dig in right away, but is reminded by Qiao Hu that, as his mom says, he must wash his hands. Great fun is had in washing hands and beating those nasty germs, and finally the food is consumed with clean hands.

 

An imitation of a game show is used next to teach Chinese kids the characters corresponding to four animals, which serves to teach me the actual words: ox, sheep, horse, and pig. Qiao Hu and his bunny friend compete and raise placards to show the character that corresponds to each word, in turn.

 

The following clip is clearly designed to train toddler’s brains. Cats are shown among other animals, then hidden, and the viewer is supposed to remember where the cats are located. I’m proud to say I got them all right! I’m at least as smart as your average Chinese two year old! And I even understood a couple of words.

 

Next, Chinese kids are trained in counting and rudimentary division. I get to review my numbers and some extra words related to food and counting while watching the tasty pizza slices and fish distributed between the cartoon crocodiles.
